It’s a good thing we’d decided to take a bit of a rest week after the Rock CF Half Marathon last week because we were pretty busy helping my parents with their transition to their new apartment. There was a lot of going back and forth between the house and the apartment as well as moving some things to our house. Due to some health challenges, it’s hard for my dad to do any physical chores and that leaves quite a bit to my mom so we step in as much as we can. The house my parents are moving out of has been their home for the last 42 years. It was my childhood home and I have so many wonderful memories there. I know my parents move was necessary (my dad and stairs are not a great combo) but I was really dreading moving day.
I once again realized that God indeed knows what He’s doing. My parents slowly started disassembling the house a few weeks ago and that made it seem less like the home I once knew. I’m a very sentimental person and seeing your memories being boxed up is tough but seeing them unpacked at the apartment helped me to remember that it’s not the building but the people in it that make a place a home. So by the time moving day came, it was easier than I thought it would be. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not exactly ready to drive by and see the new family but I know I’ll get there.
The moving company that they hired really couldn’t have been better and the apartment managers have been excellent as well. Bryan and I have moved twice in the past but I honestly think this has been more tiring. When we moved we just resigned ourselves to live amongst the chaos but with my parents we’re trying to do as much as we can for them on top of trying to maintain a bit of normalcy in our own home. Let’s just say that the vacuum hasn’t made as many appearances in my house as it should’ve the last couple of weeks 😉 . I imagine, though I haven’t asked him directly, that it’s also been a bit tough on my brother since he lives and works 8 hours away and hasn’t been able to be here since Christmas. He didn’t get that one final walk through of the house that we all got and he won’t be here to see the new place in person until the summer.
In the end, there’s still work to be done to get my parents settled into their new place but I’m glad that we can all start to get back into a normal routine. My dad’s tv is getting hooked up tomorrow just in time for him to watch the opening baseball game of the season for our beloved Detroit Tigers! For Bryan and I, we were back at bootcamp tonight and have a couple of runs scheduled this week so we can get back on track for the Flying Pig Half Marathon in Cincinnati in May. These last several months have definitely been filled with change and I know God has more change for me to face but what never changes is my faith and my family, what more does anyone need.
Did you move around as a kid or did your family stay in one place?
If you could only hang on to one memento from your childhood, what would it be?

They are so blessed to have you helping them. A move is overwhelming at our age, so I can’t imagine being older and having to tackle so much. Glad to hear his TV was hooked up for opening day 🙂
