I love a good book! To be able to sit down and read for a couple of hours straight is a dream for me. When my kids were small, reading was a luxury unless it involved Franklin or Elmo or something out of the Dr. Seuss collection and those were all great, don’t get me wrong, but they don’t replace a good novel. Some of my favourite authors over the years have been Maeve Binchy, Jodi Picoult and more recently, Liane Moriarty. I love how these ladies write. They always strike the right balance of predictability and unpredictability, happiness as well as sadness and even a little bit of suspense. I love these authors so much in fact, I’ve read every one of their books and some of them more than once! When it came time to pack for our recent anniversary trip, I needed to find some new material.
Enter The Woman Who Stole My Life by Marian Keyes and Landline: A Novel by Rainbow Rowell. After doing a little internet research on authors I might like I came up with these two options. I decided to purchase both books just in case I didn’t like one of them. A funny thing happened though…I loved them both! The Woman Who Stole My life is about a woman in Dublin who, during an otherwise ordinary day, experiences something that on the surface seems very minute but in the grand scheme of things changes her life forever. This book had me literally laughing out loud at some parts and tearing up at others. I absolutely could not put it down! I think I read the entire 530 pages in about 3 days which while not a record for me was pretty close! The other book I brought along, Landline, was equally delightful. While not as long, at 308 pages, it was just as enjoyable. The author, Rainbow Rowell, poses an interesting question to the reader “If you got a second chance at love, would you make the same call?” and the scenario she creates is one that involves a magic telephone that can call into the past. I was skeptical at first but Landline was a very enjoyable read! If you’re looking for a great summer read, something that’s light, clever and might just make you laugh out loud, I highly recommend checking these books out. The added bonus for me…these ladies have both written other books! I guess I’d better make more room on my bookshelf 😀 . Happy reading everybody!!

Thank you for these suggestions. While Franklin, Elmo, and Dr. Seuss are my priority during this stage of life, I still do love getting lost in a novel now and then!
