So, a few weeks ago we began our half marathon training. Our plan is an October half so this really is the beginning of our group training. Everything seemed to be going along great until Friday. We were enjoying some family time with my brother and sister-in-law from Ottawa, playing a friendly game of Settlers of Catan. As I got up from the table I noticed something didn’t feel right in my back. I’m no stranger to back injuries sadly so I’ve come to know the difference between a small ache and a problem. This was a problem. By the time Saturday morning rolled around I was having trouble standing up let alone walking or running. Well, my long run was off the table, thankfully it was a drop-down week anyway. I grabbed my roller, my yoga strap, by list of physio exercises (from the last time this happened) and my Biofreeze, I was determined to try everything to loosen up and get better as soon as possible. I should know better, I should know that these things take time but I’m not a patient person especially when it comes to being sick or hurt.
By Saturday night I knew I was going to be flat on my back for a few days at least 🙁 . Luckily I have an amazing husband and kids who stepped up to help me out, even Ollie tried to help by offering extra snuggles 😉 . I’m not going to lie, I was pretty bummed about the situation and was pretty grumpy too, sorry guys!
Lots of t.v. for me!
And a treat! There’s a lot of ice cream packed into those little guys! We all shared so we could test out the flavours and my favourite hands down was the peanut butter half baked. I’m not a huge cookie dough fan but peanut butter cookie dough, hello!! I knew I couldn’t just sit around and wait for my back to get better so I made an appointment at my local massage therapy centre. Everyone over there is so amazing. As soon as I described my issues they knew what the problem was. Somehow I managed to aggravate my Piriformis muscle in my right glute. When this muscle becomes inflamed it presses on the sciatic nerve which explains my lower back pain as well as the sensations I was feeling down my legs. Finally, I was seeing a dim light at the end of the tunnel. After a 30 minute session, which involved an elbow pushing directly on the muscle, I was starting to feel a little relief but I had homework. Once a day I apply the heating pad and then sit on a tennis ball in order to loosen the muscle and I make sure to stretch every hour or so. All in all I’ve missed 3 workouts this week but I know it was necessary. Trying to push yourself when your body isn’t ready is will only lead to bigger problems and more couch time! My plan is to try my next scheduled workout but at a very gentle pace and if I’m not feeling good, I’ll stop…I will…honest…
How do you handle injuries or setbacks?
Favourite ice cream flavour?
